So......the 5 day trip around a small corner of south Spain has finished today. Last night concluded with a walk around the town, eating probably the best cheese and jamon of my life, and I have eaten a lot over the last 30 years, and made some new friends and contacts. Up early this morning to see the local beaches, the wild life reserve in the distance, yet more castles, churches, a local market and a visit to a sherry bodega. The wines are kept in old American oak casks that have been used previously for brandy and whisky - and the sherries take from 2 to 8 or 9 years IN the casks before they are bottled. Just lovely !!
I hope you enjoy some of my last photos from the dinner last night and my visits today.
So now at the end of the fourth of the South Spain trip.
No great roads and rides today because of the visit to Huelva town centre and a couple of the surrounding villages. The piers in the photos are the old piers used by the Rio Tinto Mining Company when they exported the iron ore around the world.
Lunch today was a media-racion of bacalao (cod) in a special home made batter and quickly deep fried, served with salad and tomato - absolutely fantastic. Full of flavour !!
Tomorrow is the last day, and now near the coast, so the photos will be a bit different tomorrow. Seaside !!!
On the same Southwest Spain trip, I also visited the amazing caves and joined the one hour tour to see the underground passages, tunnels, stalactites, pillars, lagoons and it's well worth the stop.
The south of Spain is truly amazing - and all these sights are so close and easy to see in one day - and have time to buy the best food, local cheese, jamon and have a glass of the local wines !!
More photos from the second day of the trip. Still so much to see and do - and not enough time !!
Today was a shorter ride than yesterday, and allowed much more time to stop and visit the fascinating places that are just waiting to be discovered.
Again, the roads here are virtually empty, and just amazing. The villages are hundreds of years old and the hotel tonight is a converted farmhouse - the animals used to live downstairs and the farmers in the rooms upstairs. Low, sloping roofs, wooden beams and floors - and beautifully renovated to maintain the original charm and character of the original homestead.
Out touring for a few days near the southern most border with Portugal. Arrived before a huge storm hit - so I was lucky !!
The route started in Marbella and headed up to the mountains of the Sierra Morena, to the north of Sevilla. The roads are perfect, no pot holes and virtually empty !!
The scenery is just amazing with the hillsides covered in holm oaks, with animals foraging for their food under the trees. The places visited included villages with the usual castles, churches and plazas - and of course the food is first class, plentiful and at very good prices if you choose the menu del dia and the tapas.
The hotels I chose are small and perfectly situated in the centre of the towns so that everywhere is accessible just by walking in the evening.
I have added photos to show some of the places visited - and not just more pictures of roads !!!!
This is Day 5. Yet another great day for biking and this time going from one Sierra to another.
The start was slow since trying to stay on the regular roads and avoiding the highways is not easy. I'm Old School and don't follow a GPS, so I got lost for a while in the nearby towns and villages, and also the olive groves. BUT - you learn a lot at the same time and I have now seen more places that will be on my next Holiday List !!
So the roads head up into the Sierra and although the clouds closed in there, was no rain.
The routes are nice and views amazing, but because there are so many corners, twisties, hairpins and narrow roads - it is not a fast route do do a high mileage. It takes longer than you think when you stop regularly to take photos and videos.
But it is still worth it. Southern Spain, the country, people, food and wines are amazing
Ride Safe. Hope you like the video !!
This is Day 4 of the Tour and circles from the hotel right around one of the Sierras. Great route and views aver the lakes and the mountains, and although not actually much mileage, the road is pretty narrow and twisty - so not a fast route at all.
The hotel after the long twisty descent from the Sierra was great. I went out in the evening for dinner, just a short walk along the road from the hotel, and ate a fabulous dinner in one of the restaurants that specialise in local produce from the Sierra.
Ride Safely !!
Hello again Bikers,
This is the best day so far, with absolutely incredible routes up very steep mountains, with lots and lots of curves and hairpin bends.
Needless to say, the view from the top is incredible.
The route then continues on the high ground and finishes through arid, desert type of countryside and then into the endless olive groves before arriving at the hotel.
I am carefully scouting for good routes and safe parking for motorbikes and searching out excellent accommodation that is a short walking distance from the hotel to a selection of bars, tapas and other restaurants in the evenings.

This is the first full riding day that starts at the coast and winds its way through the hills and mountains. The views are spectacular and the roads are pretty empty and great quality. The route ends up back down on the coast for the next evening in a great hotel with a pool.

Custom Bike Tours has been out in Southern Spain to scout for new routes, new destinations and some great hotels.
This is the film from Day 1 - which starts off at the coast and heads into the hills and back to the coast. This could be a shorter day for riders just arriving and would be a familiarisation day. The hotels are all excellent with great parking, food and local towns and villages within walking distance at night.
